AbsoFarm

Vietnam: $70 billion in farm exports, and every drop of water counts

Farm exports: $70 billion in 2025; greenhouses and net houses: 112,000 ha; ag drones: about 7,000. The key resource is water: droughts and salt in the Mekong Delta, a single reservoir on Phu Quoc.

Numbers

  • Farm, forestry and fishery exports: $70.1 billion in 2025 (+12%, a record); the 2026 target is $74 billion or more.
  • Agriculture: 11.6% of GDP and 25.7% of employment (2025); rice: 43.5 million t from 7.13 million ha.
  • 2025 exports: coffee $8.6 billion, cashews over $5.2 billion, rice $4.1 billion, durian ≈$4 billion, pepper $1.66 billion.
  • Greenhouses and net houses: 112,300 ha (2025), up from 4,100 ha in 2016.
  • Ag drones: about 7,000 (census of 01.07.2025); drone treatment in the Mekong Delta costs ≈120,000 dong per hectare.
  • 9.15% of crop farms use sensors, robots, drones or biofertilizers.
  • VietGAP: more than 317,000 ha; certified organic: 32,700 ha.
  • The “1 million ha” low-emission rice program: 354,800 ha by March 2026 — 197% of the first-phase plan.
  • The 2019–2020 drought: 41,900 ha of rice hit by salt, 96,000 families without water.

What matters in Vietnam

Our assessment as of 30.10.2026: where AbsoFarm is most useful.

Sensors, drip and water automationHighWater is the main constraint: salt, droughts, a single reservoir on Phu Quoc; only 9% of farms have sensors.
Training: drones, VietGAP, low-emission riceMediumA pilot license has been mandatory since 01.07.2026; a Vietnamese partner and the Vietnamese language are needed.
BiologicalsMediumThe target is 20–30% fewer chemicals; organic is still ≈1.4% of farmland.
Greenhouses and net housesMediumThe area has grown 27-fold, but local builders are inexpensive, and Da Lat is restricting greenhouses.
A teaching farm on Phu QuocMediumAs production, weak: water and the price of land. As a teaching farm and agritourism with a Vietnamese partner, yes.
Ag drones as a serviceLowAbout 7,000 drones at ≈120,000 dong per hectare: the market is already taken.
Drone supplyLowDJI and XAG dealers are already there; imports need a provincial license after review by two ministries.
SeedsLowTropical varieties and local registration are needed.

The rules of the game

What AbsoFarm doesn’t do

  • Doesn’t promise a foreigner land ownership: only a lease from the state through a company, or a partnership with a Vietnamese farm.
  • Doesn’t fly drones without registration, a tag, a pilot license and a flight permit.
  • Doesn’t import equipment without an import license.
  • Doesn’t label produce VietGAP or organic without a certificate.

Where the opportunities are

  • Moisture and salinity sensors, drip and water metering for dry and salt-affected areas.
  • Preparing pilots for their license and farms for VietGAP and GlobalGAP — with Vietnamese partners.
  • Biologicals and beneficial insects: state targets call for fewer chemicals.
  • Agritourism and teaching farms: Phu Quoc’s pepper farms already sell tours.
  • Trade with Russia: agricultural trade was $1.34 billion in 2024, ≈40% more than a year earlier.
