Mekong Delta rice
Vietnam’s rice bowl is moving to less water, less fertilizer and fewer emissions. A state program targets a million hectares by 2030, and the first results are already in.

Numbers
- Vietnam’s rice: 43.5 million t from 7.13 million ha (2025).
- The plan for 2030: −30% fertilizer and pesticides, −20% water, mechanization above 70%, farmer profit +50% (Decision 1490/QĐ-TTg).
- By March 2026: 354,800 ha — 197% of the first-phase plan; more than 1,100 cooperatives and 210 companies.
- According to participants’ reports: yields +12%, spending on fertilizer and crop protection −40%, emissions −3–4 t CO₂ per hectare.
- Drought and salt in 2019–2020: 41,900 ha of rice hit, 96,000 families without water.

What to learn
Garden
Straw and crop residue go into compost and mulch, not into the fire: the program’s fields do the same.
Farm
A cooperative buys machinery and services for less: drones, dryers, straw collection.
Agribusiness
Carbon payments become income if there are field records and protocols.
